Pierre-Yves Cousteau Visits Santorini

pierre-yves cousteauWorld renowned diver Pierre-Yves Cousteau will be in Santorini tomorrow, to discuss the pilot program that has been in development on the island for the past three years. Cousteau, in collaboration with a Greek institution, aims to create a marine park (protected area) within which fishing will be prohibited.
Pierre-Yves Cousteau, a Goodwill Ambassador for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), was in Thessaloniki today, where he spoke at the High Level Conference on Fishing Capacity, under the auspices of the Greek Presidency of the EU Council.
The founder of “Cousteau Divers”, who continues the work of his late father Jacques, stated that the project in Santorini started three years ago, but he “underestimated” the time it would take to secure the consent of the island’s fishermen for the venture.
Although a committee of local stakeholders has been established there is still some concern on the part of fishermen as to how this will affect them and their families. “I believe that there is genuine interest in getting to the next step and creating a law that will protect the sea of Santorini,” he added.
Cousteau told the Conference that tomorrow and over the weekend he will discuss the fishermen’s concerns, because “it’s one thing to have a park on paper and another to make it a reality.”
