The story of a 54-year-old woman, who Thursday morning attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the old fortifications in the town of Iraklion on the Greek island of Crete, has shocked the local community.
The Greek woman was a familiar figure for many of the local people, as for many years she was running the cafeteria in a public institution. Everyone knew that she had a lot of financial obligations, but they also knew that she was a strong fighter and tried with all her powers to get through those difficulties, especially for the sake of her much-loved daughter.
People with whom the 54-year-old socialized every day at work reported that she had given no indication of the despair she was feeling. A handwritten suicide note referred to the efforts she made to earn “a plate of food with my blood.”
Referring to her husband, the woman asked him to look after their daughter, be always by her side and help her studying, and she also sought forgiveness from her child.
In her note, the woman also informed her husband that the previous day she had paid the rent, while some money she had on her was intended for the social security payment.
“When you grow up, you’ll hopefully understand. From everything I earned, there were always others who took it without deserving it,” the woman told her daughter in the note.
The condition of the woman, who is currently hospitalized, is life-threatening. It is one of the many attempted suicide cases brought to light every day that shows the decline of society in Greece and the major social consequences attributed to the Greek financial crisis which are often neglected.
