New Name for 'New Democracy'?

new-democracy-Greek-political-party-SamarasRecent changes in Greece’s political landscape have put officials on high alert at New Democracy, with the upcoming EU elections crucial to the ruling party’s continued existence.
Secret polls by the party suggest that alternatives have to be found, if it is to gain ground in May’s elections. A name change appears to be one of the most-mooted proposals, as the name created by Konstantinos Karamanlis back in 1974 has rather lost its sheen.
The Greek newspaper “To Vima,” which seems to have the inside track on the potential changes, notes that Samaras is determined to “alert” all reformists and pro-European partisans, so as to form a new urban pro-European party. The newspaper adds, however, that using the name “alert” might create the wrong impression and attract the radical right, so should be avoided.
Currently, the goal of the Greek Prime Minister is to combine all scattered partisans and form a new center-left party to become New Democracy‘s successor. This change seems to be crucial for the further existence of the Greek center-left Greek scene and will alter the wider political. Samaras also plans to invite members from other parties, such as PASOK, to join his new undertaking in the center-left.
One potential new name could be “Nea Ellada” (“New Greece”), a term Samaras has been using frequently. In a recent interview, he said: “The new Greece isn’t just a ‘slogan’. It’s a reality already born around us,” without providing further clues of any intention to change the party’s name.
On the other hand, New Democracy MP Dora Bakoyianni said in a recent interview that the party should change its course and target primarily the troubled and confused centrist Greek voters. “The center is homeless today,” she observed, adding that these are the voters pursued by the new parties ‘Elia’ and ‘To Potami.’ “We could address the troubled European centrist voters with much more credibility than the other parties do,” Bakoyianni said.
