Greek MPs Opposed to New Milk Deal

Greek-milk-spillTwo Greek MPs and a Deputy Minister have already expressed their disagreement on the upcoming deal on milk, which is being put through by the Greek government and the representatives of Greece’s international creditors.
The Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Food Maximos Charakopoulos has reportedly decided to resign, expressing his disagreement on the decision of the troika to prolong the lifetime of fresh milk, which is said to have a severe impact on the Greek agricultural sector. The politician from the rural area of Larissa, in central Greece, is expected to announce his resignation at the end of the week following the EU summit on Friday and mentioned that he would stay consistent to his ideology.
Charakopoulos’ likely resignation is sure to create a government crisis, while the opposition by many other MPs supporting the coalition government also poses a serious problem.
New Democracy MP Iordanis Tzamtzis also expressed his disagreement with the decision, saying that it’s a bad deal. Meanwhile, earlier on Thursday, PASOK MP Michalis Kassis said that he would vote down the new deal as well.
On the occasion of this new revolt by its MPs, however, the government is thinking of establishing a new article forcing all its MPs to vote in favor of a decision so as not to threaten the integrity of the government.
