Greece Hit Hardest in Europe by Flu Virus

influenzaAccording to data by the European Center for Disease Prevention (ECDC), released by the Athens Medical Association, in 2014, Greece has the highest rate of flu-related deaths in Europe.
As reported, 106 people had died by Saturday, March 22, in Greece. Flu deaths in Spain amounted to 155, but the country’s population is 46 million which is more than four times larger than Greece’s population (11 million people).  Sweden has experienced only four flu deaths, while Britain hasn’t reported any this year.
The high number of flu-related deaths is due to poor vaccination. In December, the NGO ‘Doctors of the World’ reported that Greece was close to “tearing down the vaccination barrier.” According to the organization, thousands of Greek children have been left unvaccinated as their families have no health insurance.
“Uninsured children are unvaccinated are in imminent danger. Apart from the threat to their own health, they face exclusion from school because there are directives saying unvaccinated children cannot attend,” the NGO stated.
Giorgos Patoulis, the president of Athens Medical Association, asked the Greek government to develop a national vaccination plan for next year. Main opposition party SYRIZA claims that the cuts to primary healthcare have led to an increase of the flu death toll.
