A new political is unfolding Monday concerning the candidates for the forthcoming municipal elections in Piraeus.
Many eminent citizens of Piraeus, along with local forums, are urging shipping tycoon and chairman of Olympiakos FC, Vangelis Marinakis, to run for mayor, a move that would surely stir up the political hornet’s nest in that municipality. According to some sources, Mr. Marinakis, whose father Miltiadis had been on the city council, is seriously considering his candidacy and arranged a meeting with his partners to discuss this possibility.
Furthermore, Mr. Marinakis’ inner circle has reportedly made clear that he has not yet made up his mind as he is busy with his shipping business. However, his love for his home town could be a decisive factor in his final decision, and it is rumored that, if he does stand, he would include on his ticket the son of the former Olympiakos owner, Petros Kokkalis.
