Parliament Votes to Lift Immunity of Golden Dawn MPs

golden-dawnThe Ethics Committee of the Greek Parliament voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of three members of the neo-nazi Golden Dawn party, Konstantinos Barbarousis, Polybius Zissimopoulos and Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos.
Barbarousis and Alexopoulos submitted a written report, while Zissimopoulos appeared before the members of the Committee to answer their questions. All three Golden Dawn members denied accusations concerning involvement in a criminal organization and stated that the reasons why they joined Golden Dawn were purely patriotic.
Konstantinos Barbarousis reported that he comes from a rural family who taught him to love and honor his country. “Neither I nor the party to which I belong to have committed any offense. I have my conscience clear and I can look you right in the eyes. However, I doubt if my political opponents can do the same. I have always honored the laws and institutions of my homeland”  he added.
The Plenum of the Parliament will also hold a vote to decide the immunity lift of five other members of Golden Dawn which include: Eleni Zaroulia, Michalis Arvanitis, Ilias Kasidiaris, Nikos Kouzilos and Dimitris Koukoutsis.
The murder of the anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas by a Golden Dawn supporter last September triggered an investigation towards Golden Dawn’s action. Several Golden Dawn members are accused of participating in attacks against immigrants while other charges involve possession of firearms.
