Huffington Post in a recent article, once again praises the natural beauty of Greece. The article entitled “If Greece’s Melissani Cave Doesn’t Inspire Wanderlust, We Don’t Know What Will,” is presenting the stunning Melissani cave located in the Greek island of Kefalonia. Melissani cave had also been included in one of the newspaper’s lists as one of the 12 most breathtaking landscapes on earth.
The cave is located on the east coast of Kefalonia and it is in a shape of a “B.” It is known as the “cave of the nymphs” as in ancient times it was dedicated to the Nymph Melissanthi. According to the legend, Melissanthi committed suicide and fell in the lake because the god Pan was not responding to her love.
Melissani cave, is 3.5 km long, 40m wide and 36m high. It was created by a mechanical and chemical process during which water enters the rocks and corrodes them creating hollows. The cave and its underground lake was discovered in 1951 by the Greek paleontologist Giannis Petrochilos and opened to the public in 1963.
Archaeological research also revealed a Pan’s sanctuary and several findings including a figure of Pan, a clay disc and plate depicting figures of nymphs.
Visitors can reach and admire the stalactites and crystal blue waters of the cave through an underground tunnel.
