Local Winners in Thessaloniki App Competition

applicationGreek applications for the internet and mobile phones that stood out in the competition held by the municipality of Thessaloniki, “Apps4Thessaloniki”, were awarded at a special event at the town hall of the city. The competition was jointly organised by the OKFN Greece (Open Knowledge Foundation Greece) and the research unit URENIO (Urban and Regional Innovation) of the Aristotle University.
The competition’s main objective was to unleash the potential of the participants to create applications that will provide residents, visitors and businesses with new services in order to promote the development of entrepreneurship and innovation.
The top three applications, which won a cash prize of 3,000 euros each, were: Prisma, an innovative e-government application, Thess-rampa, which helps people in wheelchairs moving safely in the city and Vithess which informs Android users of the sales in the nearby stores.
A cash prize of 2,000 euros were given to the application Active Citizens, which enables people to inform others about things such as a car accident, natural disaster or a complaint, and to CarMate, a car-sharing service.
Other applications that stood out were: Time Travel in Thessaloniki, a location-based Android application that displays and highlights old photographs of Thessaloniki; Ether, which provides information on the air quality in Thessaloniki; and Points of Interest, which enables users to find places such as museums, theaters or enterprises.
