Train Station in Peloponnese Turned into Museum

railway stationThe Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) is to restore an old train station in the Peloponnese, southern Greece, for use as a railway museum. The impressive building has been characterized as a work of art as a typical example of rail architecture in Greece, but has been shuttered for nine years.
The two-story building combines elements of neoclassicism and art nouveau, and was built between 1884-1889 based on the designs of a group of French engineers. However, it took its final form between 1912-1913, based on the designs of the Saxon architect Ernst Ziller.
The building has retained 19th-century decorative elements, such as domes, wooden clocks and marble fireplaces and in seeking to preserve that atmosphere, OSE will not proceed with a complete renovation but only with restoration of damaged features. The new museum will host an exhibition space, a multipurpose rooms and shops.
The project was discussed at a meeting of the Central Council for Modern Monuments on Thursday, at which members agreed the restoration of the building and proposed the roof also be replaced.
