Shipwrecks, Tragic Stories Hidden in Rust

ShipwrecksThere are about three million undiscovered shipwrecks scattered in the oceans across the world, some of which are thousands of years old. From those which have been discovered, many are abandoned and remain either submerged or grounded near beaches covered in rust, while others have turned into tourist attractions.
Among some of the most famous shipwrecks worldwide are the following that took place in Greece.
Mediterranean Sky
Built in 1952, in England, the Mediterranean Sky cruise ship was originally called City of York. In 1971 it was renamed Mediterranean Sky. Its last trip was in August 1996, when it traveled from Brindisi to Patras, in Greece. The company which owned the ship went bankrupt and the ship stayed anchored in Patras port for two years. In 1999 it was towed to the Saronic Gulf in Greece and since then it has been abandoned there, grounded in shallow water.
MV Captayannis
The MV Captayannis was a Greek freight ship used for carrying sugar. In 1974 it sank in the River Clyde in Scotland after a collision with a BP tanker during a severe storm in the west coast. The water was pouring in and Captayannis’ captain led it to shallow water. The ship rolled over the next day and since then, it has been stuck there since there have been no attempts to salvage its remains. The locals are calling it the “sugar boat.”
Dimitrios
Dimitrios was a small, 67-meter freight ship built in 1950 that has been abandoned on the beach of Valtaki in the prefecture of Laconia in Greece since 1981. Rumor has it that the vessel was used to smuggle cigarettes between Turkey and Italy. It was seized by the Greek port authorities and then it was stranded to sink in Valtaki beach, where it still remains today.
Olympia
Olympia was a commercial ship driven ashore on the Greek island of Amorgos in 1979, probably by pirates who were heading for Greece. After an unsuccessful attempt to pull the ship out of the gulf, it was abandoned there. Nowadays, Olympia is one of the most popular landmarks of Amorgos.
Evangelia
Evangelia was a Greek freight vessel built in 1942. On October 15, 1968 the vessel was grounded off Costinesti in Romania due to a dense night fog and was left stranded there. The ship was allegedly wrecked by its owner who wanted to collect the insurance money.
