Recently stunt pilot Peter Besenyei teamed up with Red Bull to conduct a flight pass through the famous Corinth Canal in Greece. Besenyei “made a dream come true” when he piloted his plane up the extremely narrow Corinth Canal. The Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea, it is 6.4 km (4mi) in length, only 21 metres (70 ft) wide at its base and impassable for most modern ships.
An initiator of the Red Bull Air Race championship, Besenyei not only crossed the canal but also performed multiple aerial tricks and extremely risky maneuvers.
After his daring exploit which also involved flying under the old bridge of Corinthos the 57-year-old – who won the inaugural edition of the Red Bull Air Race world tour – said it was a ‘dream come true’.
“The Red Bull Air Race is a fantastic opportunity to fly low at high speeds,” says Besenyei. “I really enjoy the racing and the way we fly. It’s a great challenge and a great adventure. There’s nothing comparable anywhere.”
A friendly, pensive and determined man, Besenyei has worked as a test pilot for the Hungarian Aviation office and as an aerobatics flying instructor. He progressed to become one of the most popular sportsman in his native Hungary for years thanks to his unrivaled flying successes. Besenyei also became famous around the world for his awe-inspiring skill as he flew upside down under the Chain Bridge that spans the Danube river in Budapest.
Besenyei has flown all the aircraft used in the Red Bull Air Race, including the Zivko Edge 540, the Extra and the MXS. He has also been a catalyst for inventing a number of new original flying moves such as the ‘knife-edge spin’. His unparalleled experience and expertise was put to good use when he was called in to help develop the Red Bull Air Race in 2001 and two years later he took first place in the inaugural race in Zeltweg, Austria.
