General Strike on Wednesday

strikesThe boards of the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Supreme Administrative Council (ADEDY) have called the employees in the public and private sector to participate in the general strike that will be held on Wednesday, April 9.
The protesters will meet on Wednesday, at 11:00 am in Klafthmonos Square, central Athens where they will demonstrate against the tough policy of the Greek government and the new measures that afflict their sectors. The federation of private employees, as well as the unions of teachers and professors have announced that they will participate in the strike.
Problems are expected to arise in the transportation sector as the Panhellenic Federation of Railway Workers and the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation will also participate in the strike.
The journalists’ union has also announced a 24 hour strike on Tuesday, April 8. The employees in the media sector will meet on Tuesday noon outside the headquarters of the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA). They are protesting against layoffs and demand the signing of new collective agreements.
