Vangelis Marinakis, the Greek ship-owner and Olympiakos F.C chairman will not offer his candidacy for Piraeus mayor at the upcoming local election. However, the ballot will have Olympiakos colors all over it, as Marinakis’ right-hand Yiannis Moralis will running for the position instead.

Mr. Moralis, who is Olympiakos’ vice president as well as president of the Greek SuperLeague, said that he will resign from his current posts in order to devote himself to Piraeus’ local society. Marinakis, who had initially been approached by prominent locals to run for mayor, will run on Moralis’ ticket as a candidate for city councillor alongside either Sokratis or Petros Kokkalis.

“Yiannis Moralis candidacy is a big victory for Piraeus. I put all my trust in him as he is suitable for the position and the responsibilities that come with it,” Marinakis said.

“Our love and passion for our city is what we have in common. Piraeus must be victorious and become a model of management, development and prosperity for all. I am running as City Councillor and stand next to Yiannis Moralis, for a great upset.”

Moralis himself stated: “Piraeus has been the gem of my life. I studied at the University of Piraeus, worked and still work in Piraeus, and through my 20-year journey in Olympiakos, I have lived the city, the neighborhoods, the people, and their problems so I have the necessary experience to do what is needed to be done.

“I share common concerns with the majority of Piraeus citizens, and with influential people who love Piraeus, for the present and future of our city.

“Thus, I have decided to run for the position of Mayor of Piraeus. My love and passion for the city, the knowledge and the plans I have in mind is what drove me to this decision. We can all work together to build our city as we want.

“I invite you all to walk with and unite our forces.”
