Cypriot President Invited to Attend Deep Purple Concert

Deep_PurpleCypriot president Nicos Anastasiades was invited by the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to attend the concert by rock legends Deep Purple. The concert will take place on May 24, at the Near East park in Nicosia. The Turkish leader invited Anastasiades to attend the event as part of the peace talks.
Eroglu invited Anastasiades during an interview to the Turkish newspaper Aksam, in which he protested against Greek Cypriot efforts to cancel the concert. “When our folk dancers go to another country the Greek Cypriot side is protesting. Likewise they tried to cancel the concert. I called Mr Anastasiades and asked him to put a halt to that but I wasn’t heard. So I asked him to come and watch the concert with me, as a confidence-building measure,” stated Eroglu.
The concert, which will be held in the northern part of Cyprus has created an uproar, forcing the group frontman, Ian Gillan to state on April 3 that the band wasn’t taking any sides. “Amongst many of the countries we have visited in our peripatetic jaunts are Israel, Lebanon, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, USA, Venezuela, Argentina, UK, China and Japan — all of which have a conflict with somebody or another, and all with behavior and traditions that someone else doesn’t like,” stated Gillan, adding that he loves them all. Gillan said he once came close to banning himself from performing for political reasons, when the group was scheduled to tour in England.

Deep Purple were invited by the Near East University to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
