Greece’s main opposition party SYRIZA has called all citizens of Athens to a demonstration on Friday against the visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
SYRIZA stressed that the visit of Chancellor Merkel in Athens to “is to support the Samaras-Venizelos coalition government, in view of the elections, to reward the catastrophic work of the government, to oversee the continuation of austerity, to inspect whether the banks were given away to the vested interests, if the public property was sold for chicken feed, whether the Greek wages have dropped to the level of those in Bulgaria.”
At the same time, according to a poll taken by Pulse on behalf of Greek newspaper To Pontiki, just one in four Greeks offered a positive opinion about Angela Merkel.
According to the survey, 69 percent of those polled have a negative view about Angela Merkel, compared with 24 percent expressing a positive opinion. Among the voters of New Democracy, Merkel’s approval rating was lightly higher, 41 percent, although 52 percent disapproved of the German Chancellor. However, only 10 percent of SYRIZA voters had a positive opinion of her, compared to 83 percent holding negative views.
Fifty-two percent of those polled share Alexis Tsipras’ opinion that Merkel’s policies are dissolving Europe, whereas 35 percent disagree.
Remarkable unanimity was noted as to whether Prime Minister Antonis Samaras should question Merkel about  “occupation loans”. About 80 percent of respondents agreed while only nine percent held the opposite view.
