Eighteen million tourist arrivals were recorded in Greece last year, 2.4 million more than in 2012, according to Bank of Greece research, named the “Frontier Survey” published Tuesday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT). The survey reveals most visitors to Greece come from Europe, while 20 percent came from Russia.
Most foreign arrivals ― 88.1 per cent ― came from elsewhere in Europe, up by 13.9 percent, including a 7.5 percent increase from EU states.
The data indicates a major influx from Russia, from 874,000 in 2012 to 1.4 million in 2013. Arrivals from France, Germany, Serbia, Poland, Italy and Netherlands also increased significantly, with tourists from Asia, USA and Canada also up.
However, the number of tourists from Great Britain, Norway and Cyprus declined last year.
