Greece’s main opposition party SYRIZA beamed its first broadcast salvo in the electioneering campaign prior to May’s European elections under the slogan “We vote; they leave.”
Seeking an optimistic tone, the video features the song “The world is changing” by Greek-Cypriot songwriter Alkinoos Ioannidis.
The coalition of radical left sees the forthcoming European and local elections as a referendum on the Greek government’s policy of austerity. Three of the SYRIZA’s pre-electoral posters highlight the cuts in public health sector, the closure of the former national broadcaster ERT, businesses shutting down and youth emigration as key issues for Greek society to address.
SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras is the European Left party’s candidate for the post of European Commission president, a position occupied by José Manuel Barroso since 2004.
