Greek Judges Send Prosecutors Case on Syrian Chemical Weapons in Med

The Greek government is accused of criminal negligence in failing to protect the environment during the disposal of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile, according to a citizen group’s complaint forwarded by Greece’s Supreme Court to Athens prosecutors
The General Prosecutor of Greeceā€™s Supreme Court forwarded to the Athenian Public Prosecutor’s Office of District Courts Judges a report by the Citizens Movement Against the Destruction of Syrian Chemical Weapons in the Mediterranean Sea,Ā which assertsĀ that there many violations of Greek and international environmental law onĀ Greeceā€™s behalf, as the AthensĀ government fails to exercise its rights concerning the destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons in the Mediterranean sea and to protect the environment.
The report claimsĀ Greek officials methodically arranged the destruction of approximately 1,000 tons of chemicals from Syriaā€™s arsenal at the Mediterranean sea.
In addition, the report also includes evidence which that Greek officials have a made a series of omissions regarding the environmental legislation and as a result they have also criminal responsibility over the risk of wide environmental destruction.
The report also highlightsĀ that Greece has been silent since November onĀ the controversial matter of the destruction of Syriaā€™s chemical weapons in the Mediterranean sea.
