80 year-old Runs For City Council on Mykonos

mykonos- city councilorDespite being 80 years old, Catherine Ivy Hill has put herself forward as a candidate city councilor on the island of Mykonos, in Greece’s Aegean Sea.
The 80-year-old candidate is part of the Active Citizens Movement on Mykonos, where she and her husband have lived for 33 years. Born and raised in Egypt, she used to live on Kasos but in 1981, she and her husband Richard decided to move to Mykonos after visiting the island for a weekend.
“It was the trip that changed our lives,” says Hill. “It was Easter, everything was green and beautiful, and we decided to try to find a small house. After that, everything happened very quickly: we discovered Halara, went back to Athens, resigned from my job, and the next summer we came to Mykonos for good. I started teaching French, English, Spanish and I was very fortunate to meet and get to know the Mykonian children, their parents and the way of life. Now, some 33 years later, I feel Mykonian and my children, ten grandchildren and their families come every summer with their families from different parts of the world to spend time in the island they know and love.”
