In an idyllic landscape in the Aptera Fortress in Chania, Crete, Greece, 16 couples from China exchanged vows of eternal love and devotion.
The ceremony began with the presentation of the Chinese mission by a famous Chinese TV hostess. “Greece is a mythical country and the couples who traveled here know its history well enough” she said. The couples lined up and the wedding procession was followed by Greek and Chinese officials. The audience and the villagers welcomed the couples showering them with rose petals, while lyre players and priestesses accompanied the procession in the fortress.
The Chinese couples will visit Rethimno, Aghios Nikolas and Heraklion, ending their tour of the Aegean Islands in Santorini. The wedding ceremony will be videotaped and screened at the Shangai Cultural and Tourism week. The event aims to increase Chinese tourism in Greece. It is supported by sponsors such as the Shanghai municipality, the Greek passenger ship group ANEK Lines, Greek municipalities and regional authorities, as well as chambers of commerce and hoteliers.
The first “Rose Wedding” took place in 2006 in Santorini. The Greek Tourism Minister, Olga Kefalogianni stated that it is an ideal way for Greece to be advertized.  “We want to get the message through, that Greece is an ideal destination,” she added.
