Greece Moves to Prevent Mobile Phone Theft

stolen mobileA new regulation concerning the operation of telecommunications providers attempts to stem the tide of mobile-phone theft in Greece.
Henceforth, a stolen mobile phone will be useless and the thieves won’t be able to resell it on the black market as it won’t be activated by a different SIM card.
According to the decision by the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission, which was published in the Government Gazette, all Greek telecom companies must retain lists including the international codes of the stolen mobile phones (International Mobile Equipment Identity, IMEI). The registration of this code on the list can be made by the owner of the mobile phone after informing their provider of the theft. The registration of the IMEI in the list can also be made at the request of the police.
All mobile companies in Greece have five months to comply with the new regulation.
