University of Crete in Top 100 of the World

universityThe Times Higher Education (THE) annual list of the leading 100 universities founded in the past 50 years, classified the University of Crete in 48th place. However, the Cretan university was classified significantly lower in a list including the top 400 universities of the world.
The Times Higher Education list of the top 100 universities established in the past 50 years that was published on Wednesday, was accompanied by an introductory report which praised the University of Crete for excelling in spite of  Greece’s financial difficulties. 
In the list of the 400 top universities, the University of Crete was ranked between 301st and 350th place. Only the first 200 rankings are presented with the remainder bundled into groups of 50.
The university of Crete was set up in 1973 and consists of 5 faculties and 17 departments. It has around 16,500 students and 700 teaching staff based at 3 campuses. It is well-known both nationally and internationally thanks to its research activity and innovative initiatives. In 2011, Times Higher Education announced it as the best university in Greece due to its research influence. Moreover, the University of Leiden, Netherlands has ranked it among the top 500 universities of the world.
