Violence at the Greek Super League Play-off

football-clashesViolent incidents between so-called ‘supporters’ of Panathinaikos and PAOK Salonika marred the Greek Super League play-off in Athens on Sunday as rival groups of thugs threw flares and seats at each other and the riot police.

The game at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium was delayed by nearly half an hour as police struggled to restore order, while officials and players from both teams had to appeal for calm.
Usually, visiting supporters do not attend away games as a precaution measure against violence but an exception was made for this match.

The trouble started when about 600 supporters of PAOK entered the stadium and soon both sets of idiots started throwing flares, fireworks and seats.
The presidents of both clubs had to ask the morons to stop.
The game eventually started at 9 p.m. and finished 1-1. Mladen Petric of Panathinaikos opened the scoring in the 21st minute of the match before Dimitris Salpigidis equalised for PAOK in the 84th minute and to snatch a draw, leaving the play-off group wide open with all four clubs in with a chance of victory.
Thugs claiming to support Panathinaikos and PAOK also clashed during the Greek Cup final on April 26. In Greece, football hooliganism is a problem that urgently needs an immediate solution – clashes between rival gangs have brought many serious injuries, even some fatalities.
