omar farukIn what is likely to be one of the hottest tickets in town this summer, Omar Faruk Tekbilek will perform in Athens at the Vrahon ‘Melina Merkouri’ Theater, on June 30.
Omar Faruk is extremely popular in Greece and will perform with other Greek musicians such as his good friend Michalis Nikoloudis.
The Greek audience will have the chance to experience a journey from Istanbul to the Aegean Sea with the sounds of the ney, baglama, zurna and oud. Turkish-born Omar Faruk is one of the greatest ambassadors of the oriental music, a gifted instrumentalist who lives permanently in New York. His music is influenced by the traditional Sufi music, but also includes elements from ambient electronic music.
Faruk sees himself as a messenger of peace and has collaborated with top musicians including jazz trumpet legend Don Cherry, and former Cream drummer Ginger Baker.  “Music in a universal language, the link between people. When I play I don’t represent any nationality.
“I believe that the power of music brings people together. When listening to music, disputes and differences disappear,” Faruk has said. Omar Faruk has won the “Best Artist of the Turkish Music Award 2003” and was nominated for “BBC Word Music Award” in the Middle East category.
He has also been honored with the “US Golden Belly Musician of the Year Award” in 1998 and 1999, while he has received many awards for his humanitarian activity.
