Recession Takes its Toll on Student Politics in Greece

student electionsElections Wednesday for management councils at Greek universities and for the National Students Union will surely be as partisan as usual, given each Greek political party has its own student wing in the universities.
However, student elections have lost dynamism during the recession, with campaigning shrinking alongside budgets.
The student wing of New Democracy is DAP, which goes under the slogan “There is a reason” and emphasizes safety issues and has proposed security measures to guard universities.
PASOK‘s student organization, PASP, is promoting “free public education and transparency” while opposing the erasure of “eternal” students from universities’ registries and the repealing of political asylum laws.
The leftist organization EAAK says “no to the Memorandum” and that “Greek youth isn’t looking for saviors but to take power in its hands.”
Apart from the economic crisis, the process of student elections has been also devalued as many eligible voters have lost their confidence in university politics, where participants often promote party politics instead of issues concerning students.
