New Democracy Youth Wing Tops Student Elections

student electionsThe preliminary results of the student elections, held on May 7, showed that the student wing of New Democracy, DAP was elected first in most universities and technical institutions of Greece. It appears that the student wing of PASOK, PASP, has lost its popularity while Panspoudastiki, KKE’s student organization, has strengthened its position among the students. The turnout was 50%.
According to DAP representatives, in 60 Greek universities, DAP received 42.1%, PASP 12.67%, Panspoudastiki 18.38%, the leftist EAAK received 10.31% and SYRIZA’s student wing AR.EN stood at 5.5%.
Nikos Stamatopoulos of Panspoudastiki said the organization recorded an increase of 6.5% in the Greek technical institutions and 5.44% in Greek universities. Panspoudastiki reported that in 78 of 193 universities it received 22,52% (17.99% in 2013), DAP received 30.51% (31.06% in 2013), PASP 13.71% (17 , 99% in 2013), EAAK received 12.73%  (13.54% in 2013) and AR.EN took 5.66%  (4.57% in 2013).
Student elections in Athens University of Economics were marred by violence. Unknown individuals invaded the building and burned three ballot boxes. Such incidents are usual during student elections. The process is considered highly politicized, as each Greek political party has its own student wing in the universities.
