More Tourists, More Hotels in Athens Center!

syntagmaIt appears that the increase of tourism in Greece will lead to the creation of more hotels in the Athens city center and especially in the capital’s main squares, Syntagma and Omonoia.
The Greek Ministry of Defense has decided to restart the process for the long-term rentalĀ of Hotel La Mirage, which belongs to the Hellenic Air Forceā€™s Mutual Benefit Fund, creatingĀ hopes that theĀ hotel will grace Omonoia Square after more than five years.Ā
The Hellenic Air Forceā€™s Mutual Benefit Fund has been paying for the buildingā€™s maintenance and security since La Mirage closed in July 2008, so the ministry has ordered a negotiations committee to undertake the project of the hotelā€™s rental. AsĀ there will be no set price, extra caution will be taken in the evaluation of the company to undertake the hotelā€™s operation, including renovation expenses.
A unit of the Electra Hotel group will be housed in the former building of the Education Ministry, in Mitropoleos street, near Syntagma Square.Ā The hotel group, which also maintains two more units close to Syntagma is planning to create a six story building thatĀ will be leased for about 40 years, with the option of an extension.
Furthermore, a boutique hotel owned by Benakopoulos hotel group will open in central Athens by 2015. The unit with a capacity of 50 beds,Ā will be located in Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, in a building owned by the company.Ā It is estimated that the project will cost 7.5 million euros.
