Turkish Vessel Expected to Sail In Greek Continental Shelf

New tensions over the continental shelf has brought a Turkish survey, which is expected to be conducted on Tuesday, May 20. The dispute between Greece and Turkey, which was particularly intense during the mid 1970s and again the late 1980s, had calmed in the past few years. This new incident, however, is anticipated to increase tension once again. The continental shelf is of high importance due to its connection with a state’s control over fishery, oil drilling and similar rights.
According to Greek news, a Turkish research vessel, possibly the Cubuklu, will sail in the northern Aegean, west of Samothrace and the northwest of Limnos without permission. Few weeks ago, another incident between the two countries took place when Greek and Turkish air force jets had a mock dogfight.
Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos has already contacted Ankara to clarify the situation and said he will speak directly to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davuloglu if needed.
