The on-duty Greek Supreme Court judge dismissed late on Friday the case brought by the Greek Finance Ministry concerning the immediate implementation of a First Instance Court’s decision on the reinstatement of the fired cleaners working in various buildings across the country under the jurisdiction of Greece’s Finance Ministry.
Earlier in the day, the ministry, after consulting with government lawyers, referred the matter to the Supreme Court so as to determine if the First Instance Court decision should be executed immediately, while also finally deciding to appeal against the Court’s decision, opposed to earlier reports.
Now, the lawyer representing the fired cleaning staff has asked for their immediate reinstatement at their old posts in the ministerial buildings.
At the same time, a lawsuit against any person responsible was submitted on behalf of the cleaners’ union on Thursday, May 22, to the Misdemeanors Prosecutor in Athens, in order to investigate the reasons behind the Finance Ministry’s decision not to follow the court’s judgment.
The approximately 400 cleaners, some of whom have camped outside the headquarters of the Finance Ministry in downtown Athens for a 17th consecutive day, have been included in the availability measure and are now protesting against the decision, which according to their lawyer is unconstitutional and equals lay-offs.
