Local elections in Messinia yielded a dead heat in the second round of mayoral elections, with the two candidates – Giorgos Tsonis and Stathis Anastasopoulos – each garnering 9,236 votes in an exact 50:50 split.
Anastasopoulos won the first election round clearly with 44.45% to Tsonis’ 29.55%, but the balance kept shifting in a neck-and-neck second round vote count, such that by just after 1 a.m, with results in from 101 of the 102 polling stations, Anastasopoulos was ahead by a mere 77 votes. The last polling station returned a 77 majority for Tsonis to produce an extraordinary result.
The Court of First Instance has now the final word on the Mayor’s selection.
