Starting next month, Greek public hospitals will be able to admit up to two million uninsured patients, without any admission fees. In particular, uninsured patients will be hospitalized in public hospitals for free, provided that they have received a referral from a doctor of the Primary National Healthcare Network (PEDY) and the special three-member medical committee which will be set up in each hospital, certifying the patient’s need for hospitalization. It has already been determined that uninsured citizens can visit PEDY doctor’s free of charge.
According to the Greek Health Minister, Adonis Georgiadis, a joint ministerial decision will be signed, setting the terms and conditions for the free admission of uninsured patients in hospitals, which will take effect from the next month onward. Moreover, in the coming days any discussions concerning EOPYY and pharmaceutical coverage for the uninsured will be completed.
According to Georgiadis’ announcement, their goal is to send a message that when it comes to health issues our society cannot exclude any citizens. Meanwhile, he gave credit to his predecessors for their contributions to rationalizing expenditures, noting that without them, the government wouldn’t have been able to implement this change. He added that “as the country exits the crisis, any injustices that occurred will be corrected.”
