Modern Greek Migration Map

student migrationThe Greek Ministry of Education released a map concerning the modern wave of migration of Greek families, due to the financial crisis.
The study that deals with Greek student transfers to schools abroad, shows that a large number of middle and high school students (and therefore their families) are leaving Greece to attend schools abroad. Especially in regions such as Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia, Thrace and Attica, many families are migrating to countries such as Germany,Albania, England, Australia. Furthermore, the study shows that some families even migrated to Turkey, Poland and China last year.
In total, 1,130 families with children in secondary education migrated last year, while another map shows that 565 transfers took place from schools abroad to schools in Greece.
As the Ministry of Education observed, there is no way to know the actual number of students who were transferred to schools abroad, because most countries do not require official certificates in order to enroll a new foreign student. Therefore, most of the students who migrated were not officially recorded.
Most Greek families appear to have migrated to Germany where there were 527 Greek student enrollments for the school year 2013-2014. Furthermore, Albania has the second largest number of migrating families from Greece, a fact which shows that many Albanian families who lived in Greece are now returning to their homeland, due to the financial crisis.
