UNESCO Good Will Ambassador Marianna V. Vardinoyiannis has launched a new campaign with the title “Return (the marbles), Restore (Parthenon), Restart (History)” for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.
In a statement during a press conference held at the Acropolis Museum on June 24, Mrs Vardinoyianni stated that the campaign aims to continue and intensify efforts for the Parthenon Marbles to be returned to Greece by the British Museum in London.
The campaign is carried out in collaboration with the Melina Mercouri Foundation and the Elpida Association. The campaign’s opening event is an international conference entitled “The Parthenon, the integrity of a monument-symbol, the role of citizens, an international campaign” which is scheduled to take place at the Acropolis Museum on Thursday, June 26.
Greek and foreign experts and activists will participate, while a nationwide survey among Greeks on the importance of the Marbles’ return will be held for the first time.
Mrs. Vardinoyiannis will then submit the outcome of the conference and the survey to the Director-General of UNESCO during the meeting of UNESCO’s Good Will Ambassadors to be held on June 30 in Paris.
