GOODBYE SPAIN AND ITALY
After two weeks of constant football, the 20th World Cup group stage has come to an end. A number of surprises took place notably with the elimination of the last two world champions, 2006 winner Italy and 2010 Spain. Out of the group of death (Group D), England failed to make it through, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal from Group G. In place of them, surprise Group C leader Costa Rica and 2nd placed Algeria from Group H. The Netherlands, Argentina, Belgium and Colombia swamped through their groups with 3 wins each, while the first lead the best offense with 10 goals. Mexico from group A, stunned with their defensive skills conceding just 1 goal while Switzerland conceded a total of 6 goals making them the worst defensive team of the final 16. Greece had the worst goal differential with -2 and Colombia the best with +7. Algeria and Greece make the knockout stage for the first time.
