Blackout Risk in July — Greek Government Selling PPC

PPC
There has been serious reaction to the Greek Government’s attempt to sell 30% of the Greek PPC (DEY), especially from the opposition party, SYRIZA, as well as several unions. Meanwhile, Greek citizens and tourists face the possibility of blackouts in the middle of the summer.
The government seems determined not to allow unions to cause blackouts, sending the message that the country will not sink into darkness. The Greek Government has aggravated social groups by threatening PPC workers with conscription measures. Furthermore, the government wants to convince MPs to support the strategy of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
On the other hand, SYRIZA has made solving the PPC problem its main issue. Party members and SYRIZA MPs and even the party’s leader, Alexis Tsipras, have been touring Greece supporting protests in areas where there are PPC plants and factories. A meeting has been scheduled this afternoon, July 1, in order to provide several guidelines while party leaders are promising a “hot summer.”
In the meantime, union workers are threatening to turn off PPC switches, going on repeated 48-hour strikes as of next Wednesday, when the Greek Parliament will begin debating the proposed bill.
The protests are expected to begin in West Macedonia with the occupation of the power plant gate in Ptolemaida, Amyntaio and Florina. The unionists wish for their protests not to be shunned by Greek society but to involve more and more local communities.
