Nine Oil Blocks in Crete to Be Auctioned

In an event held on Tuesday July 1 in London, Greek government officials presented several blocks to be auctioned to foreign companies interested in oil exploitation, for surveys in the Ionian islands, Crete and the Peloponnese.
The presentation included nine blocks south of Crete, an area considered interesting and promising, another area south of the Peloponnese, as well as other areas in the islands Othonoi, Ereikoussa and Mathraki north of Corfu. The blocks to be auctioned amount to 20.
The head of the Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management (EDEY), Sofia Stamataki, stated that the auction does not include areas near the coasts in order to protect Greece’s tourism.
The companies that participate in the auction have to file one application for each block while the evaluation criteria concern the technical proposal (40%) and the financial proposal (60%). Finally, in case of consortia, the participation of companies can’t be less than 10%.
Several studies conducted in Crete have shown that important oil reserves may exist in the area.
