The Chinese consortium Friedmann Pacific Asset Management (FPAM) and Shenzhen Airport reaffirmed their interest in buying a majority stake in the Athens International Airport at a meeting held on Thursday, July 3.
During the meeting, attended by Development and Competitiveness Deputy Minister Notis Mitarakis and representatives of the Association of Chinese Business Groups, the Chinese consortium stated that the Athens International Airport can become a source of considerable investment and growth for Greece.
FPAM managing director Eric Cheng said: “We have been negotiating with the Greek side for three years and our investment interest in Athens International Airport is well known. The larger our holding in the airport, the more scope we will have for investments in it.”
Cheng also explained that his business group wishes to create a gateway from Asia to Europe, and the Athens International Airport appears to be the only airport that has significant scope for growth, while he revealed that the consortium has already been in contact with the Canadian company that currently manages the airport.
The Greek minister said that the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED) intends to launch an international tender for the sale of a majority stake in Athens International Airport soon and stressed that conditions were ripe for developing direct air connections between China and Greece.
