New Vessel to Patrol Illegal Immigration Flows

The Hellenic Coast Guard will soon enrich its fleet with a new open-sea patrol vessel, the Stan Patrol 5509.
The problem of illegal immigration flows into Greece by sea has made the need for modernizing and enforcing sea patrols a necessity for the country, stated Maritime Minister, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
The cost of the new vessel, approximately 28.8 million euros, will be covered by the European Fund for External Borders. The boat primarily serves for military missions.
The Stan Patrol 5509 is based on the popular enlarged ship concept integrating a sea axe bow form. The hull is made of steel, while the wheelhouse is of aluminium construction. The vessel has an overall length of about 55m and beam of around nine metres. Its forward bow deck can be mounted with weapon systems, while the aft of the bridge structure can also be installed with armaments.
The patrol boats will carry two rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) to achieve long-range interception and boarding capability. The RIBs can be launched and recovered by davits. Other auxiliary systems include fire-fighting system, bilge water separator and fuel separator. The patrol boat also has storage facilities to hold fuel oil, fresh water, bilge water, lube oil and sewage.
Illegal immigration flows into Greece have increased in the last few days through the eastern borders of the country.
In the early hours of Thursday, 32 illegal immigrants – 18 men, 6 women and 8 minors – were spotted at the eastern coast of Farmakonissi island, in the Dodecanese. All were taken by the authorities to Leros island, where they were arrested.
In a separate case, the Hellenic Coast Guard and police arrested 26 illegal immigrants – 20 men and 6 women – at the southern part of Chios island, northeastern Aegean Sea. They were scheduled to be taken to the island’s General Hospital for precautionary health tests.
Another four illegal immigrants – 3 men and a woman – on board of a polyester boat were arrested at Marathounta gulf, Simi island, while 16 illegal immigrants were spotted at the Faneromeni area of Lesvos island and were detained at the island’s port of Mytilini.
