A video posted on YouTube by the Panhellenic Coast Guards Officers’ Federation reveals the inhumane conditions in an immigrants detention center in the island of Symi, south-eastern Aegean Sea, Greece.
The federation with an official announcement stated that the video is showing the real situation that the coast guard officers are dealing with on a daily basis. The announcement said that these shocking images from the detention centre are a shame of the Greek coast guard that is supposed to serve tourists and Greek citizens.
The video shows many immigrants piled in a little space sitting on the floor almost one on top of each other. The federation calls the Greek state to immediately deal with the problem and to find a sustainable solution for the protection of basic human rights.
Greece is considered the main point of entry to the European Union. As of late, the number of immigrants — especially from the Middle East — attempting to enter Greece has increased because of the war in Syria and tensions in the surrounding areas.
The Greek authorities have been condemned many times both by the European Court and humanitarian organizations for the detention conditions which are degrading and violate the basic human rights of immigrants.
