Greek Government not in Favor of Meimarakis' View for a Referendum

tsipras meimarakis referendum The Greek government is not in favor of Parliament Speaker Vangelis Meimarakis’ view to debate on a possible referendum regarding the privatization of part of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) over the weekend if 120 MPs call for it.
Meimarakis expressed his “personal” view that it would be possible to debate a possible referendum on the PPC privatization before it goes to vote in the Parliament on Wednesday. He said that different proposals could be considered over a weekend session despite the summer recess.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras distanced himself from Meimarakis’ stance as the government has sought to gain political capital from ending the PPC workers’ strike.
Left-wing SYRIZA party calls for the immediate discussion of the PPC’s privatization plan at the Parliament Plenary, because that is what “common sense and democracy call into what we know as parliamentary practices according to the Lisbon Treaty” it says in an announcement.
SYRIZA insists that Samaras is trying to avoid this discussion, fearing a possible referendum on the “Small PPC” issue will bring more profound problems of the government to the surface.
Four different proposals to hold a referendum on the issue of “Small PPC” have been made, one from SYRIZA, one from Democratic Left, one from the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and one from the far-right wing Golden Dawn party.
However, SYRIZA does not wish to rely on the votes of Golden Dawn MPs but rather on Independent MPs.
The legislation paving the way for the privatization of the so-called “Small PPC” passed through a parliamentary committee last Friday. MPs from PASOK and New Democracy approved the legislation but all the opposition parties voted against it.
