Facebook Thanks Greek Cyber Crime Unit

internetWith a long announcement, Facebook thanked the Greek Police and especially the Cyber Crime Unit for the arrest of two Greek hackers, 31 and 27 years old, who created the virus “Lecpetex” that damaged thousands of computers around the world.
Facebook administration stated that being one step ahead of the latest threats is a complex process and that Lecpetex was a particularly dangerous malware. It was highlighted that the  cooperation between authorities can be useful and productive to disrupt the action of such programs, especially when criminals exploit several online platforms to achieve their goals.
Facebook thanked the head of the Greek Cyber Crime Unit, Manolis Sfakianakis and the police officers who handled the case for their professionalism.
Facebook pointed out that the fighting of malware such as Lecpetex helps the company to learn more about the techniques of malicious software and to use this knowledge to create safer programs.
The virus that had affected almost 250,000 computers around the world was spreading through social networking pages. Once the user opened the message, the virus was infecting their computer as well as the computers of their contacts.
The perpetrators were spreading the malicious software using the program Peer 2 Peer, free cracked versions of popular games, songs and films, which they were sending to their victims. They were stealing bitcoin in order to turn them into euros using the digital currency exchangers available on the internet and to collect illegal profits.
