Crete: German Builds Houses With Mud and Blue Cheese

crete-housesThe 63-year-old German engineer, Mario Zomer, does not require the help of the Greek government, Troika or the government of his native country.
He was trained as an electrical engineer in Berlin and for two decades has been walking in the steps of Odysseus and Zorba, in Crete‘s Palaiochora. His whole life revolves around this small town which is located in the southwestern part of Crete near Chania.
In 1989, when foreigners were allowed to acquire land in Greece, Zomer purchased a field. He settled there and with great ingenuity he created a kind of model village. The German engineer specializes in creating natural buildings.
He builds houses with mud and wood, makes his own lime as people used to do 3000 years ago and also uses dairy products such as blue cheese (which contains the protein casein) for the finishing coat of walls.
This modern day Gyro Gearloose, reintroduced building techniques which were used during pre-Minoan times to the people of the Greek island.
