Cyprus Population Decreased Due to Immigrants Outflow

Cyprus_NikosiaData released by the European statistical service Eurostat showed that the population of Cyprus decreased in 2013 due to the outflow of legal immigrants living in the island.
Figures showed that the population of Cyprus in 2013 decreased by 7,900 people. Cypriot residents amounted to 858,000 at the end of 2013 compared to 865,900 in 2012.
In 2013, births in Cyprus stood at a ratio of 10.8 per 1,000 residents compared to 10.0 in the EU with total of 9,300 people born in the island. Cyprus recorded the lowest ratio of deaths at 6 per 1,000 compared to an EU average of 9.9, with deaths amounting to 5,200.
The island’s population also presented the greatest decrease in foreign immigrants in the EU, with a ratio of 13.9 per 1,000 residents or 12,000 people. In the European Union the number of legal immigrants increased by 653,100 people, 437,300 of whom were immigrants who took up residence in Germany.
According to Eurostat figures, population in Greece decreased to 10.992 million on January 1, 2014 from 11.062 million on January 1, 2013. In 2013, births in Greece amounted to 94,100, while deaths reached 112,100. Meanwhile, the number of legal immigrants in Greece decreased by 52,000 people.
