Troika Satisfied with Layoff Targets

The Troika of Greece’s international creditors completed their meeting with Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “Significant progress has been made and this has also been acknowledged by our creditors,” sources from the Ministry stated after the meeting.
The Ministry’s plan regarding public employee layoffs will be followed as scheduled this year. According to the agreed upon memorandum, during the 2013-2014 period there will be 15,000 layoffs. There will be 6,500 more layoffs this year and the government should immediately make plans for the next six months.
Sources from the Ministry of Administrative Reform noted that the Troika representatives did not raise the issue of quantitative targets and availability.
The 2014 layoffs are expected to begin in September and be completed by December, after hearings have been held for the cases involving the removal of 500 public employees on perjury. There is further research underway by the House of Auditors of Public Administration to identify employees who have been appointed using forged certificates.
