Samaras Calls for Acceleration of Privatizations

”’Õ≈ƒ—…¡”« ’–œ’—√… œ’ ”’윒À…œ’In a meeting that included Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, as well as Greek Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis on Monday, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras set the issue of accelerating privatizations.
Hardouvelis went to the Prime Minister immediately after concluding a 3.5 hour-long meeting with the Troika which focused mainly on privatization delays and downward revisions of yearly targets. According to government sources, Monday’s discussions proved productive.
The government is hopeful that by sticking to the budget – attaining its targets – will help with the Troika negotiations in the autumn on possible tax relief measures. The Troika is currently scrutinizing the budget, looking into its progress, as well as the projection of its data into the future. Both the government and the Troika appear to be primarily concerned with the ways in which the old vicious circle of the economy can be transformed into a virtuous one in order to assist Greece’s recovery.
The Troika also met with Education Minister Andreas Loverdos on Monday evening, having discussed the staff evaluation issue, as well as the common programme of the Education and Labour ministries regarding professional training and apprenticeship.
Back-to-back Troika meetings on Tuesday
The Troika review team has arranged back-to-back meetings with Greek officials and cabinet ministers at the Finance Ministry on Tuesday, speeding up the talks with the Greek government ahead of its scheduled departure on Thursday.
They will start off by meeting the national coordinator for the fight against corruption Ioannis Tentes at 11:00, before participating in a council on private debt at noon. Participating in this council will be the ministers of Finance, Development, Labour and Justice, as well as representatives of the Bank of Greece (BoG) and the Hellenic Bank Association (HBA).
Meetings will follow with Interior Minister Argyris Dinopoulos at 14:00, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Mihalis Chrysohoidis at 15:00, and Labour and Social Insurance Minister Yiannis Vroutsis at 16:00.
There may also be a meeting at 18:00 with Rural Development Minister George Karamanis, while teams representing the Troika of Greece’s lenders will also visit the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT.)
