Mid-Summer Rainfall in Greece Today

thessaloniki
We may be in the middle of the summer, but a shift in weather is expected today, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected today in most parts of Greece.
The change in weather started yesterday, when Thessaloniki experienced heavy rainfall that caused serious traffic problems as many drivers were trapped in their cars. The phenomena are gradually expanding to most parts of the mainland and Evia island. Lamia and Halkida are already experiencing heavy rainfall.
The heavy rainfall will be accompanied by gale strong winds of up to 7 on the Beaufort scale in northern Aegean Sea and in some areas we can expect hail. Temperatures are expected to drop to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius.
In Attica, some clouds will gradually give way to rain and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. The temperature in Athens will reach a maximum of 30-31 degrees Celsius, while winds will be moderate.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has warned for severe weather phenomena in the region. However, these phenomena will ease out as of tonight.
In Thessaloniki, we can expect rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with winds blowing from the north-northwest at a speed of 5 on the Beaufort scale. The temperature will reach a high of 27 degrees Celsius.
The weather is expected to improve as of tomorrow.
According to climate models illustrated at a recent international conference, Athens will experience an increase in temperatures, more frequent extreme weather phenomena, as well as heavy rainfalls during autumn in the coming years.   In addition, a survey of the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens, showed that due to climate changes, ozone pollution will increase, as will the risk of forest fires, and death tolls caused by heat stress and heat waves.
