4.9 Earthquake in Chania, Crete

EarthquakeAn earthquake of 4.9 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred at 9:37 am in the Greek island of Crete. The earthquake wasn’t felt despite the fact that it was nearly of 5 magnitude.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center its epicenter is estimated at 13 kilometers southeast of Paleochora area, in Chania district.
ItsĀ focal depth, estimated at 30 km, may be the cause that the earthquake did not have a great impact despite its magnitude.
The Mediterranean region is seismically active due to the northward convergence (4-10 mm/yr) of the African plate with respect to the Eurasian plate along a complex plate boundary. Greece lies within this seismically active area.
Earthquakes have historically caused widespread damage across central and southern Greece, the islands of the Ionian Sea, the island of Crete, Cyprus, Sicily and other neighboring regions.
In January, a series of strong earthquakes on the western island of Kefalonia damaged hundreds of homes and injured more than a dozen people.
