Greek Government Prepares for Troika's Return

troika_neoGreek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras or Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis are expected to inform the members of the coalition government in the coming week on the actions that each department has to carry out, and the time frame in which these actions must be completed, so Greece is prepared for the Troika‘s return to Athens in mid-September.

The Greek government has to complete five out of six so-called “prior actions” by August in order to receive the next 1 billion euro tranche of its bailout. However, there are also 600 more minor actions pending before the Troika’s return.

Samaras is hoping to convince the Troika about Greece’s progress that will lead the country into a post-memorandum era.

Another crucial issue that the coalition government has to deal with is the conflicts on the reforms that are being carried out. The socialist party PASOK has recently expressed concerns on the process of evaluating civil servants. PASOK members are displeased as the Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has stated that at least 15% of employees in each government department should be deemed below standard. However, PASOK has said that they will not oppose to the implementation of any of the measures ordered by the Troika.

The evaluation process is behind schedule after civil servants’ union ADEDY ordered its members not to participate in the scheme. A court last week ruled that the union’s actions were illegal. ADEDY’s appeal against that decision is due this week by the Council of State.
