Variations Of The Greek Salad

feta-PDOThe Greek salad (choriatiki salata) is a favorite dish of Greeks and tourists. Made with tomato pieces, sliced cucumber, onion, feta cheese and olives, it combines all the traditional flavors of GreeceHowever,  the Greek salad is not the only traditional salad of the country, as each region has its own variation. They are all slightly different but still delicious.
Greek Salad from Tinos: The island of Tinos has three main traditional recipes for Greek salad. They add capers, green and black olives, olive tapenade, and delicious, sweet seaweed. It often includes orange peppers instead of green. The second recipe sounds more exotic, with black olives and delicious banana peppers. The last recipe has the feta cheese on the side and not in the salad.
Greek Salad from Heraklion, Crete: In Crete they call it “Cretan salad”.  In this recipe, the taste remains the same but the appearance is different. Cucumbers are cut in round slices instead of quartered and the feta is cubed. It also contains brown bread croutons, soaked in olive oil.
Apart from the Greek salad, Greeks also prefer the salad with lettuce, onion and dill, the cabbage salad dressed with olive oil, lemon juice and garlic, and the beetroot salad with boiled and sliced beetroots dressed with olive oil and red wine vinegar.
